CHOOSING A COUNSELOR

Choosing a counselor for the first time can cause anxiety.  You may be asking yourself "how will I know if I am choosing the right person?"  You should feel free to ask questions that help you make the right selection.

Is the counselor licensed or certified by a professional organization?

What kind of education, training, and experience does the counselor have?

How much experience has he/she had with my type of problem?

Does the counselor have a clear, well-defined structure and procedure for enabling you to reach your goal?

Is the counselor a member of recognized professional organizations?

Are consultations confidential?

Are fees reasonable and affordable?  Is there a sliding fee scale?

Are insurances accepted?

How long is the consultation?

What is the average number of sessions required?

Is the emphasis on short or long term counseling?

Is the counselor available in emergencies or have evening hours?

In addition to answers to these questions,  it is important to listen to your feelings about the counselor.  Does this person inspire trust, demonstrate compassion, or encourage questions and challenges?  Counselors who have experienced therapy themselves may be better able to understand clients' needs.  The counselor should put you at ease, give you opportunities to express yourself, and demonstrate understanding of your needs warmly and genuinely.  Credentials are important but cannot substitute for what you feel.

Studies have shown that while fees vary among counselors there is no direct relationship between cost and the outcome of counseling.  Effective counseling depends upon a good match between client and counselor.  The successful counselor reassures clients that he or she is  there for as long as you need him or her and demonstrates caring beyond the immediate issue that brings the client for help.  Interview several counselors to find one who engenders feelings of trust and empathy.  As in other professions, some professionals will be fine and others not; do not feel intimidated.
